Respiratory Syncytial Virus
The respiratory syncytial virus, also known as RSV, is a common virus that typically causes mild symptoms resembling those of a cold. The most common viral cause of acute respiratory tract infection is a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Even though RSV affects people of all ages, the disease is more severe in infants, resulting in significant morbidity and hospitalization in young children and the elderly. United Lab Care offer comprehensive RSV test in Chicago.
What symptoms does the respiratory syncytial virus present?
RSV typically results in a cold but can also cause pneumonia or bronchiolitis. RSV cold symptoms include:
Coughing
Runny Nose
Fever
Decreased Appetite

RSV in Children
Infants and toddlers can be at risk from the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), which mimics mild cold symptoms. The respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV for kids, is a prevalent and highly contagious virus that most children will contract at least once before age two. Thankfully, most cases show mild symptoms and can be treated at home with rest and regular fluids, but some children can become extremely ill and have difficulty breathing. In such case, visit your nearest hospital or have your child tested for RSV in Chicago.

How Does an RSV Test Work?
A sample fluid from your nose is tested to determine if you have RSV. Several ways to collect a sample for RSV test are:
1) A Nasal Rinse or Aspirate
This is the most common method for collecting a sample for RSV testing. Our medical professional at United Lab Care will gently suction a saline solution (salt water) out of your nose during a nasal aspiration.
2) A Nose Swab Test
Our specialized professional uses the nasal swab to collect a sample from your nose by a medical professional.
* Samples for the RSV test should be taken within the first few hours and days of the onset of symptoms for the accuracy of test results.
RSV Test Results
There are two RSV test results:
- A negative result indicates that your sample did not contain any signs of the RSV virus. They might suggest that another illness brings on your symptoms. However, RSV is still possible despite a negative test result.
- If your test comes back positive, you likely have an RSV infection.
When Do You Need an RSV Test In Chicago?
Your doctor probably won’t order RSV testing in Chicago if you have symptoms but are otherwise healthy. Most healthy people and children with RSV will recover in one to two weeks. To alleviate your symptoms, your doctor may suggest taking prescription medications and drinking plenty of fluids. Before giving your child any medicines, talk to the person caring for them.
Infants, young children, and older adults may require hospital treatment if someone has breathing problems or has lost too much fluid and become dehydrated. Oxygen and fluids administered via IV may be part of the treatment. A ventilator, a breathing apparatus, may be required in the most severe cases, but this is uncommon.
